Cathy Russell launched Free Boulder.org in 2021. My initial goal was to celebrate freedom and to help freedom-loving Boulderites connect with one another to take action to protect, restore, and promote freedom in Boulder and beyond.

Most of the content on Free Boulder was written by Cathy Russell. All the typos and errors are my own. I thrive on learning. I especially like to learn about where I am in error or misguided, so I can improve. I appreciate feedback to make these pages as accurate and useful as possible.

I am a Colorado native who has lived in Boulder on and off for about 25 years. When I was younger, I traveled in Europe, Asia, Mexico, and South America. I have lived in Germany, Austria, and Japan. I currently live in South Boulder with my husband, son, dog, garden, and a pond full of black and gold fish.

I am an evolutionary cell biologist. I earned my Ph.D. investigating how bacteria evolved via horizontal gene transfer.

I consider myself a scientific optimist, one who sees the world through the lens of the scientific method of observation, skepticism, and integration of data. Although humanity in general, and the US in particular is faced with many challenges, based on my observation of the world, I am optimistic about the future of Boulder, our State, our United States of America, and the world.

As I see it, the free flow of useful information, whether it’s genes (genetic replicons) or memes (cultural replicons) is the basis of evolution, whether biological or cultural. In the interest of promoting the information that drives innovation, freedom, and hope that creates a flourishing future, I have been writing web pages.

Today, people are waking up to misinformation as never before. At times, learning about the pervasiveness of misinformation can be overwhelming. And then, we learn that harmful misinformation is the norm. Billions of years ago, single-celled bacteria had to deal with misinformation (rogue viruses, for example), or die. Now, we all have the opportunity to learn how to protect ourselves from dangerous information. It’s not an easy task. But forewarned is forearmed.
